Outlook Express

Refer to this page if Outlook Express is possibly corrupted. Please read this page in its entirety before beginning. McAfee makes no guarantees as to this software and the user executes at his own risk.

DBXtract is a recovery tool used to restore corrupted Outlook Express email folders.

Please refer to http://chattanooga.net/~scochran/DBXtract.htm for a full explanation of the DBXtract shareware utility.

  1. Download the DBXtract utility to your desktop - the file is DBXtract.exe and can be downloaded from http://chattanooga.net/~scochran/DBXtract.exe
  2. Create a folder that you want to recover the emails from on your desktop. For example, c:\windows\desktop\emails
  3. Double click on the DBXtract.exe that is located on your desktop. It should detect where your inbox.dbx file (which contains all of the emails that you want to recover).
  4. Under the path box located under OUTPUT, click the browse button to browse to the emails folder that you created in step #2 and highlight it.
  5. Click the OK button.
  6. Click the Extract button. All of the emails that were in the inbox will then be extracted into the folder created in step #2. Each email will be represented by a .eml file.
  7. Once all of the emails are extracted, open Outlook Express.
  8. Open the emails folder on your desktop.
  9. Highlight all of the .eml files in your emails folder and drag them to one of the folders in Outlook Express. The emails will be reappear in Outlook Express.
  10. Verify that your emails are there, then you may delete the folder you created in step #2.

USING DBXtract

IMPORTANT: While the program only reads the dbx files, it is important that OE is closed when the program is in use. This is especially true if one has background compaction turned on under Tools | Options | Maintenance. If OE is open and is accessing the dbx file at the same time as the program is, it is possible the file could become corrupted (or the entire message store could be). It is very important then to make sure OE is closed. The program itself does not modify any dbx files or any files associated with OE.

DBX files can get rather large and the larger the file the more slowly it will run. It is best to compact the dbx files in OE using File | Folder | Compact to minimize their size, but it is not necessary to compact them in order for the program to function accurately. With uncompacted folders, however, more messages or some partial messages may be extracted than the number that OE indicates are in the folder. DBXtract is designed as a recovery tool, so expect many false positives in the extraction process. Most of these will have a filename of 'No Subject'.

Recover Mode

The purpose of this mode is to recover messages that have been deleted from the deleted items folder. With the DBX files, Microsoft chops each message into 512 byte pieces. When a message is deleted from the deleted items folder (that has not yet been compacted), then OE removes the first 4 bytes of each piece, so it is not possible to recover a message in its entirety. However, with this version of DBXtract, one can recover from the deleted items.dbx file, such pieces that are still there and reassemble what is left of the pieces. To accomplish this, check the Recover Mode box. Then browse to the deleted items.dbx file and set the output directory. Then click the Extract button. A set of text files will then be extracted into the output directory. For the sake of completeness, all fragments will be recovered. A lot will have the filename NoSubject appended by a number. Most of these will be redundant and can be deleted (Make sure the by Subject check box is checked when using the Recover Mode feature, so one can distinguish between them). Images and other attachments will be incomplete and likely irrecoverable, but text and message headers should be largely intact.

The author makes no guarantees as to this software and the user, upon downloading and executing it, does so at his own risk. DBXtract has been rather extensively tested, however, and any risk would appear to be minimal (except as stated above with respect to OE being open simultaneously).
